The festival, organized by Giovanna De Luca, professor of Italian and cinema at the College of Charleston, continues at the Sottile on Friday, October 21, with a 5:30pm screening of "La Siciliana Ribelle," or "The Sicilian Girl." Marco Amenta's film recounts the true crime story of Mafia daughter Rita Atria, who risked her life to break the code of silence and testify against "The Family" in 1991.It will be followed at 7:30pm by "Basilicata Coast to Coast," a lyrical, subtle and loving tribute to a little-known part of Italy, punctuated by a wonderful soundtrack of jazzy songs by director Rocco Papaleo. The festival concludes at the Sottile on Saturday, October 22, with a 5:30pm screening of "Fughe e Approdi," by Giovanna Taviani. The film is an imaginative journey through the magnificent Aeolian islands, and a nostalgic paean to memory and cinema. The last film in the festival series, shown at 7:30pm, is "Welcome to the South," Luca Miniero's charming remake of the French hit "Welcome to the Sticks." Miniero's version, subtler and funny, pokes fun at stereotypes associated with Italy's south.

Charleston Filmmaker Liz Oakley Shares Her New Documentary:
Awaken the Dragon
Saturday July 16th, 2011
Doors Open - 6:30pm
Show Time - 7:30pm
(Private Screening)
This year alone, over one million Americans will hear the words, "you have cancer." They will join the ranks of eleven million who have suffered through or are living with the disease. But challenges remain beyond mere survival, many who have beaten cancer find themselves lost in its aftermath. Awaken the Dragon, a new film by Liz Oakley, explores how an ancient Chinese sport is empowering cancer survivors to redefine what it means to be "sick," and the role a cancer diagnosis can play. Their journey to reclaim life leads to revelations they never dreamed of and to a life they never thought possible.
Against the backdrop of the life of a fledgling dragon boat team from the South, the film profiles individual stories of strength, courage and survival. Oakley introduces us to an unlikely crew of novice paddlers who embark on three years of intense training and nail-biting competition, culminating at the national championships. While engaged in the unfolding fates of the characters and the team, viewers will be drawn into the sport's feast for the senses - brilliant colors, pounding drums, splashing water. They will witness the transformation of twenty solitary paddlers into a single force of power and beauty. Awaken the Dragon is a story beyond survival... a story of reclaiming life... a story of awakening the dragon within.

Charleston Jewish Experience Hosts its Inaugural Jewish Film Festival
October 24th at 7:45pm
2010 marks the inaugural year for the annual Jewish Film Festival created by the Charleston Jewish Experience. The first annual event will kick off this October with a screening of a documentary titled “Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story.” This iconic film about the contributions of Jewish major leaguers and the special meaning that baseball has had in the lives of American Jews since the 1860s will light up the screen of The Sottile Theater on October 24, 2010 at 7:45 p.m. Prior to the movie screening, the organizers will host a desert & champagne reception and present the Melvin and Judith Solomon Humanitarian Award for the Arts to Judith Solomon
The documentary that debuted earlier this year in Israel is produced and directed by Peter Miller, narrated by Dustin Hoffman, and written by the Pulitzer Prize winning former New York Times sportswriter, Ira Berkow. More than a film about sports, Jews and Baseball is a story of immigration, assimilation, bigotry, heroism, the passing on of traditions, and the shattering of stereotypes. The film features a rare interview with the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax as well as interviews with Larry King, Kevin Youkilis, Shawn Green, Yogi Berra, Ron Howard and many others. The Melvin and Judith Solomon Humanitarian Award for the Arts was created to honor the Solomons as lifelong supporters of the arts in Charleston and Jewish culture and to inspire others to do the same. Melvin Solomon, a successful businessman, played a key role in establishing Spoleto USA, contributed to medical research and care at MUSC, and both he and Judith were recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals by their Lowcountry Philanthropy Award.
“We have many reasons for establishing a Jewish film festival in Charleston, but first and foremost we hope to inspire a greater appreciation and long-lasting connection among members of the broader Charleston community by showcasing our rich traditions but also our modern Jewish culture. We also strive to instill pride in the members of our congregation,” says Stanley Baker, president of BSBI Synagogue. “The event will start a tradition of featuring iconic Jewish filmmakers and movies as well as honoring individuals devoted to supporting the arts and Jewish culture in our city.”
The Sottile Theater is located at 44 George Street. The desert and champagne reception starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 for the film and reception, and $20 for the film only. For information and to purchase tickets, please visit www.CharlestonJewishExperience.com. To view the movie trailer, please visit www.jewsandbaseball.com/trailer.html.

The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet
By Peter Bloedel
June 11 & 12 at 6pm and 13 at 3pm
The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet is a funny whimsical play combining Dr. Seuss's "The Sneetches" with the storyline of Romeo and Juliet. This hour comedy is full of rhyming words, funny bits and a surprise ending. The lesson behind the play is for little ones to learn to judge people by their behavior not by what they wear on their bellies. This show is fun for the ENTIRE family. About Beaufort High School's Gingerbread Theater Beaufort High offers a children's theater series to support family date night and children's creativity. Our motto is "a family can have dinner, a show , and the kids are in bed by 8". They often perform shows for donations to the Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA). This year they perform for CAPA and donated money to a local community member who was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. The money was donated to a trust fund for his 5 children. The Theater department is excited for this wonderful opportunity to perform at Piccolo Spoleto and we are looking forward to entertaining you. This unique program was inspired by the Muses in Greek mythology - goddesses or spirits who inspire the creation of literature and the arts. The festival will highlight the gifts of the muses in drama, music, and visual art and will be an experience unlike all others with the Stratford High School Fine Arts department showcasing the best and brightest student artists in drama, visual arts and music - both instrumental and choral.
The program will be performed in complete darkness with the exception of "spotlighted" features. There will be a continuous flow of exciting events from beginning to end with a short intermission while the stage changes to accommodate the features of the second half.
Original works of art as well as slide presentations and live action painting will be featured throughout the event. Charleston Ballet Theatre Presents
Masterpieces of Dance
February 13, 2010
Sponsored by Charleston Magazine
The elegance and sophistication of the art of ballet will be on full display as Charleston Ballet Theatre premiers their latest collection of 20th century masters with the return of their annual Masterpieces of Dance winter production. This season the ballet pays homage to the master of modern ballet George Balanchine by performing two of the choreographer's most celebrated works Serenade and the ballet Rubies, the most celebrated section of Balanchine's famed Jewels ballet. Jewels has often been regarded as the first full-length abstract ballet, however it can also be seen as three separate ballets, linked by their jewel-colored costumes. Rubies, with its vibrant deep red flared costumes is the most popular of the three pieces which also include Emeralds and Diamonds. Charleston Ballet Theatre is the only ballet company in South Carolina licensed to perform the works of Balanchine. This performance is a rarity and is one of the few places in the southeast where these exclusive works can be viewed live.
The ballet company is lucky enough to bring to town one of the ballet world's living legends as choreographer Bruce Marks's Lark Ascending, a stunning work of choreography that Marks himself describes as being, "about the journey of life, the eternal flight against gravity". This famous work is a study in ambition, reaching ones fullest potential, like a bird taking flight. This one woman and five men work is one of the most celebrated in modern ballet with the piece being part of the repertoire of Boston Ballet, Ballet West, Kansas City Ballet and of course Charleston Ballet Theatre. The piece will be set by Mr. Webster Dean, who has performed Lark several times under Marks' instruction and with Ballet West. Mr. Dean will be in town January 3rd through the 10th to work with the ballet company, with Bruce Marks himself coming into town later in the month to oversee some rehearsals leading up to the performance on February 13th at the Sottile Theatre.
