The First Annual Upward Bound Jazz Benefit Concert

  • All proceeds will be used by Upward Bound to strenghten the program, which provides a rich experiential, pre-college learning adventure for eighty-two Charleston area students.

Jazz vocalist Quiana Parler is the featured artist with an impressive and legendary band that includes Chuck Dalton on trumpet, Lonnie Hamilton, III-Alto Saxophone, George Kenny-Tenor Saxophone, Chuck King-Bass, Max Moore-Drums, and Richard White on Keyboard. This all-star cast of seasoned jazz musicians will provide an evening of music that is sure to please music lovers.

The Upward Bound Program, sponsored by the College of Charleston since 1975, is a college preparatory program designed to generate in its participants the skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school. Upward Bound provides special academic and cultural opportunities for students who have expressed an interest in pursuing a post-secondary education and have demonstrated the potential for success in college. These students will be the first in their families to earn a four-year college degree and every effort is made to help them fulfill their dreams.

    Cinderella

    In order to be fiscally conservative, Charleston Ballet Theatre has replaced the costlier Camelot production with Cinderella and limited performances to one weekend.

    Featuring a magnificent score by Prokofiev and exquisitely colorful costumes and set design, Eathorne-Bahr's Cinderella is a magical extravaganza in three acts. The role of Cinderella will be danced by CBT principal dancer Melody Staples, reprising one of her most memorable and cherished roles to date. Surrounded by a fairy godmother, two truly hideous and preening stepsisters, a handsome prince, a glass slipper and a horse drawn carriage, Cinderella takes the audience with her on a journey with the fairies of the four seasons in what has become one of the world's greatest and most celebrated classical ballets.

    Legendary Violin Prodigy Jourdan Urbach Live In Concert

    • The Hemangioma Foundation is the only organization in the world dedicated exclusively to providing charitable treatment to children with vascular birthmarks.

    Jourdan is the founder of CHC (Children Helping Children), a musical charity foundation which fundraises nationally for pediatric divisions of hospitals and medical charity organizations. Proceeds from Jourdan’s Carnegie Hall Debut went to benefit The National Multiple Sclerosis Society. A renowned concert violinist, Jourdan Urbach has been compared to a “Young Paganini” with “buttery smooth playing and laser sharp technique” by New York Critics. Jourdan has performed frequently in solo recital at major concert halls in the United States, including Carnegie Recital Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Allen Room, Lefrak Hall, Steinway Hall, The Tilles Center, The Wortham Center in Houston, and The Kravis Center in Palm Beach. Jourdan now brings his incredible talent to the College of Charleston's Sottile Theatre in a benefit performance for the Hemangioma Foundation.

    Jourdan has been featured in People Magazine, April 12, 2005, in a profile article entitled “Young People Who Will Make America’s Future.”

    In March, 2007, Jourdan was the subject of a documentary on MTV entitled: Genius and Prodigy.

    Since her highly acclaimed Carnegie Hall recital debut as an artist on the Sol Hurok roster, Ann Schein’s amazing career has earned her high praise in major American and European cities and in more than 50 countries around the world. She has performed with great conductors including George Szell, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, James dePreist, David Zinman, Stanislaw Skrowacewski, and Sir Colin Davis, and with major orchestras including the New York, Los Angeles and London Philharmonics, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Washington National Symphony, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Schein performed at the White House during the Kennedy administration. She has toured with the great soprano, Jessye Norman and they are featured in songs of Alban Berg on Sony Classical. Recent recordings include a Schumann album on Ivory Classics and a Chopin album on MSR Classics.

Catch them along with the Skinned Horse, the Nursery Fairies, and the Boy as the story of "The Velveteen Rabbit" comes to life in the Sottile Theatre. Make "The Velveteen Rabbit" a family tradition and enjoy all of the wonder and majesty of live theatre. Don't miss out on the fun!

    Battle of the Party Walks is an annual "Party Walk" competition among members of the IFC, Pan Hellenic, and Non Pan Hellenic councils from the College of Charleston. Organizations from differenct councils are paired and responsible for creating three party walks: fast, slow, and danced to a song of the DJ's choice. Each team's party walk will be based on skill, mastery, difficulty, stage presence, crowd appeal, and creativity.

    Hip Hop AIDS Benefit Fashion Show

    • Part of College of Charleston Homecoming Week 2009 Festivities.

    The Lambda Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at the College of Charleston will sponsor a Hip Hop HIV/AIDS Benefit Fashion Show. This event is open to the public, and our goal is to raise awareness and funds for HIV/AIDS research. It will showcase modeling, dancing, fashion, and music through an elaborate performance. This is also an educational event as to inform people on how to prevent and stop spread of the virus. Many local stores and fashion designers will be in attendance and local artists and dance groups will perform. This is a performance you don't want to miss!

    Sean Duggan is a monk of St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, Louisiana. In September, 1983 he won First Prize in the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition for Pianists in Washington, D.C., and again in August, 1991. In 2000 he performed the complete cycle of Bach’s keyboard works eight times in various American and European cities. He is presently preparing to record the complete Bach cycle of clavier music and concertos which will comprise 25 CDs. He has performed with many orchestras including the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Leipzig Baroque Soloists, The American Chamber Orchestra and the Pennsylvania Sinfonia.

    The 2009 Miss Charleston Scholarship, Miss North Charleston, and Miss Coastal Carolina Pageants.

    Three winners will be selected to participate in the Miss South Carolina pageant later in the year. The theme for this year's pageants is "Celebration". Cynthia English, Miss Charleston 2008, will turn her crown over to the new Miss Charleston. Courtney Burke, Miss North Charleston 2008, will crown the new Miss North Charleston, and Morgan Smoak, Miss Coastal Carolina 2008, will crown her successor. Contestants will have a verbal interview and compete in swimsuit, evening gown, and talent segments.

    Jean-Francois Dichamp was unanimously awarded the Premier Prix at the Paris Conservatory in 1986. He was one of the most brilliant students of Nikita Magaloff, and later of Maria Curcio, with whom he studied for four years in London. He won three prizes at the Santander International Piano Competition. He has performed in Spain, Poland, Ireland, England, the USA, Mexico, Turkey, Colombia, Romania and South America. Recently he recorded two CDs for the Lyrinx label, one featuring works by Chopin, the other by Liszt.

    November 14 - November 16 2008 - Robert Ivey Ballet presents

    Fall Performance

    • Robert Ivey Ballet Celebrates its 32nd season "In Residence at the College of Charleston".

    We will be starting the new season with a flourish with plans for the classical ballet "Paquita", to be staged by Artistic Director Robert Ivey, Co-Director Ashley Stock, and Ballet Mistress Angela Agudo. Ms. Agudo, who joined the company last season, has professional experience with the Teatro de Colon of Argentina, the Jordan Ballet in Toronto Canada, and the Orlando Ballet. She is a definite asset to the company's amnitious new season. Co-Director Stock will present an original ballet using the music from many of Broadway's greatest scores, and resident Modern Coreographer, Eliza Ingle, is creating a world premier with original music created by a College of Charleston faculty member.

    Jazz is on the agenda with Jon-Michael Perry's exciting new jazz work. His recent work was shown at the American College Dance Festival and he has spent the summer in intensive study in Atlanta. Director Ivey will create two new pas det deux for principal dancers Angela Agudo and Tony Roe, as well as Jon Michael Perry and Lindsay Funderburk.

    November 7 2008 - The College of Charleston School of the Arts presents

    Duncan Sheik in Concert

    Grammy-award winning songwriter and composer Duncan Sheik will play Charleston, SC on November 7, 2008, performing songs from his catalogue, forthcoming CD/Theatre project Whisper House (written in Charleston, SC) and the hit Broadway musical Spring Awakening for which he collaberated with lyricist Steven Sater and composed an original score. Described by Variety as "the most startling and exciting rock tuner to hit the boards since 'Rent'," Spring Awakening has won eight Tony awards including "Best Musical," with Sheik earning two Tony awards for "Best Orchestration" and "Best Original Score" as well as a Grammy award for "Best Musical Show Album." The tour will feature orignal Spring Awakening cast member Lauren Pritchard.

    The College of Charleston's Department of Communication will honor author and political satirist Christopher Buckley with its Distinguished Communicator award. Buckley is the author of 13 books, including his most recent novel, Supreme Courtship. Fortune magazine has called Buckley "the quintessential novelist of his time." He is the winner of the distinguished Thurber Prize for American Humor and the Washington Irving Medal for Literary Excellence.

    November 2 2008 - The Charleston Academy of Music Presents

    Uruguayan and Lowcountry Youth Orchestras in Concert

    The Charleston Academy of Music welcomes the Jose Artigas Symphony Orchestra from Uruguay to play in concert with the Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry. Charleston will be the orchestra's first concert location on this tour, followed by an engagement at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York and another concert in Washington, D.C. The Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry's present conductor is Richard Marcus, who also conducts the College of Charleston Wind Ensemble. Soloing will be Javier Orman, a Uruguayan violinist who now resides in the U.S. Orman. Javier is a graduate of the College of Charleston and studied under Lee-Chin Siow as a full-scholarship student, graduating magna cum laude. During its visit to Charleston, the Artigas orchestra will also be performing for the students at the Charleston Charter School for Math and Science, patients and staff at the Medical University of South Carolina's Children's Hospital, and residents at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community.

The Dhananjayans will present BHAKTI MAARGAM (The path of devotion) in the best traditions of Bharatanaatyam.     Well known to Charleston audiences, Mr. von Oeyen has appeared as soloist with the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra to critical acclaim. Since his debut at age 17 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mr. von Oeyen has performed in recital at London’s Wigmore Hall and the Kennedy Center. Orchestral appearances around the world include the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Atlanta, Detroit, Seattle, Utah and Singapore Symphonies, Chicago’s Grant Park Festival Orchestra, and the Rochester Philharmonic. He was awarded the Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1999 and took First Prize in the Leni Fe Bland Foundation National Piano Competition in 2001.
